Adventures of Miss Fit is the definition of a passion project. Gregg and Denise Simpson put over five years of their life into this cool documentary about Real Life Superheroes. What do I mean by “Real Life Superheroes?” Does that mean police officers and firefighters?
Great guess! But no.
Real Life Superheroes (or RLSH) are folks who dress up in original costumes and try to fight crime.
The documentary follows Miss Fit (Denise Simpson) as she first tries to understand the RLSH and then gradually begins to get involved in their mission.
It turns out that over the years, the RLSH mission has become less and less about “crime fighting” and more about homeless outreach. Denise catches up with one of their supply handouts down in San Diego.
But where does my music fit into all this?
Well, once Gregg and Denise edited all this footage together, it became clear that two moments in the film needed particularly dramatic music. One moment was this homeless outreach mission, and the other was when Denise (as Miss Fit) puts together her own mission to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. You can watch both of these moments on my site here.
As a composer, I’m often replacing temp music in an edit, and in this documentary, Gregg Simpson had plastered the film with nothing but the best tracks, but I’m happy to say that even today, both Gregg and Denise prefer the soundtrack I wrote for these two scenes over the temp pieces that were in the edit for years.
This was my first documentary feature that I wrote music for, but it certainly won’t be the last. It was a great discovery process, and an amazing story. I can’t wait for the next one.
